This species is notorious for containing orellanine, a potent nephrotoxin that can lead to acute kidney failure and death. The mushroom is characterized by its brownish cap and gills, which can make it resemble edible varieties, increasing the risk of accidental ingestion. Traditionally, it has no known medicinal uses and is instead recognized for its dangerous properties. The symptoms of orellanine poisoning may not appear until several days after ingestion, making it particularly insidious. Symptoms can include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and ultimately, kidney failure.
