my absolute favorite, and most potent berry. aronias > every other berry
not that i like the taste. i just think it's the most healthiest because it's one of the highest sources of antioxidants in the berry world.
the berries sharp astringent taste dries out the mouth, earning them the nickname "chokeberries".
super cardioprotective as it lowers blood pressure (both systolic and diastolic), drops total cholesterol and triglycerides, prevents LDL cholesterol from oxidizing (the first step in clogged arteries), and improves blood vessel function.
activates eNOS (endothelial nitric oxide synthase), which makes your blood vessels release more nitric oxide to relax and widen.
also has mild blood-thinning activity. good for hypertension, high cholesterol, atherosclerosis prevention, metabolic syndrome, and overall cardiovascular health.
drink 100-300ml of aronia juice daily, or eat the dried berries.
the anthocyanins (the deep purple-black pigments), proanthocyanidins, quercetin, and other flavonoids work together to scavenge free radicals throughout your body.
also activates Nrf2 pathway. when activated, Nrf2 turns on roughly 200+ genes, but most famously, glutathione.
Reduces reactive oxygen species, prevents lipid peroxidation, protects DNA from oxidative damage, and upregulates antioxidative enzymes (superoxide dismutase ((sod)), catalase, glutathione peroxidase).
lowers blood sugar and improves insulin sensitivity.
chlorogenic acid blocks carb-digesting enzymes, anthocyanins improve insulin sensitivity, and the polyphenols protect pancreatic insulin-producing cells from damage. also reduces glycation. great for metabolism and reducing obesity.
aronia kills cervical, liver, colon, and breast cancer cells. aronia extract inhibits 60% of colon cancer cell growth after 24 hours (in HT-29 cell line studies).
anthocyanins trigger cancer cell apoptosis, stops cancer cell division, and block cancer cell spread.
good for cancer prevention through diet, particularly colorectal cancer prevention, and as adjunct support during cancer treatment.
anthocyanins concentrate in your retinal tissue, where they support night vision, improve retinal blood flow, and protect against age-related macular degeneration.
good for night vision support, age-related macular degeneration prevention, diabetic retinopathy support, and general eye health.
aronia has similar UTI-fighting activity as cranberries.
the proanthocyanidins prevent E. coli bacteria from sticking to your urinary tract lining, which reduces UTI severity and risk. also broadly antimicrobial against staph, strep, and E. coli.
drink aronia juice or take aronia extract at the onset of UTI symptoms.
protects the liver from chemical damage, alcohol, and chemotherapy drug toxicity. activates Phase II liver detox enzymes, preserves glutathione and prevents the scarring (fibrosis) that turns chronic liver disease into cirrhosis. helps reduce liver steatosis and obesity.
aronia protects the stomach lining from ulcers, kills H. pylori, and supports healthy gut bacteria growth.
aronia was specifically used in soviet medicine for post-radiation recovery, particularly important after the Chernobyl disaster. the high antioxidants scavenge the free radicals generated by radiation, the anti-inflammatory compounds reduce radiation-induced tissue damage, and the immune support helps recovery from radiation-induced immune suppression.
good for radiation exposure recovery (medical radiation, environmental exposure), post-CT scan support, and immune recovery after radiation therapy.
high in vitamin K, C, A, E. also contains a lot of fiber, folate, iron and manganese.
reduces oxidative stress caused by antipsychotic medication within 24 hours of consuming aronia berries.
studies show that antipsychotics like ziprasidone (Geodon) cause measurable oxidative stress in blood within 24 hours, and aronia polyphenol extract significantly reverses that damage in the same 24-hour window.
