Aka: Tu Si Zi
considered an agricultural pest weed globally. parasitizes alfalfa, clover, potatoes, tomatoes, and many other crops.
tu si zi seeds are the primary TCM fertility herb for both men and women.
for men: improves sperm count, motility, and morphology, reduces sperm DNA damage, raises testosterone, and helps with varicocele-related infertility (the dilated scrotal vein condition that overheats the testicles).
for women: protects ovarian follicle cells from premature death, supports ovarian reserve in premature ovarian insufficiency (POI), helps regulate the HPO axis, supports luteal phase function, endometrial implantation, and early pregnancy miscarriage prevention.
classical formulas: Wuzi Yanzong Pill (Five Seed Formula) for male infertility, Jiajian Shoutai Pills for miscarriage prevention, Jiajian Congrong Cuscutae Pills for menstrual disorders, endometrial hyperplasia, and PCOS.
for eye health, tu si zi protects retinal photoreceptor cells from light damage and apoptosis, supports retinal pigment epithelium function, and improves retinal blood flow. good for age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, retinitis pigmentosa, photoreceptor degenerative diseases, cataracts, dry eye, and screen-related vision strain.
classified as "top-grade" longevity tonic in Shen Nong Ben Cao Jing. it activates the same "longevity switch" in cells that gets turned on during caloric restriction (SIRT1). protects the mitochondria from damage, keeps them working at full capacity, and keeps energy production steady as you age.
the kaempferol compound in the seed also helps multiply brain stem cells.
kaempferol and hyperoside from tu si zi seeds boost bone growth (osteoblast) activity by increasing alkaline phosphatase (bone-formation enzyme).
protects against drug-induced kidney damage (cisplatin, gentamicin), reduces oxidative stress in kidney tubules, prevents kidney fibrosis, improves kidney blood flow, and reduces protein loss in urine. good for chronic kidney disease, diabetic nephropathy, drug-induced kidney damage, and general kidney function support.
tu si zi kills cancer cells through its kaempferol, quercetin, and hyperoside content. specifically demonstrated to prevent skin papillomas and carcinomas in mouse models of chemical-induced skin cancer. triggers apoptosis, arrests cancer cell division, and blocks tumor blood supply. good for skin cancer prevention (especially in patients with chemical or UV exposure), and hepatocellular carcinoma.
supports the immune system through macrophage activation, T-cell proliferation, and cytokine balance. boosts weak immunity, calms overactive inflammation.
BIG FYI: this counteracts immunosuppressive drugs (cyclosporine, tacrolimus, prednisone, biologics like Humira). avoid if you're a transplant patient or on autoimmune medication.
kaempferol from tu si zi seeds promotes neural stem cell multiplication, supporting brain repair, memory, and prevention of cognitive decline. good for post-stroke recovery, mild cognitive impairment, memory support in aging, and brain injury rehabilitation.
Standard TCM dose: 6-15 grams of dried seed in decoction.
for consumption:
Cuscuta extracts nutrients from its host plant. If it was growing on a toxic host plant (like certain nightshades, foxgloves, oleander), Cuscuta can absorb and concentrate those toxins into its own tissue.
Only the mature dried seeds are used. Always processed (as tea, salt-roasted, or in supplement form)
