Pong Pong

Cerbera odollam, commonly known as Pong Pong, is a highly toxic plant belonging to the Apocynaceae family. It is native to coastal regions of the Indian Ocean and is often found in tropical climates. The plant produces large, round seeds that are notorious for their lethal properties. Traditionally, the seeds have been used in some cultures for their supposed medicinal benefits, but due to their extreme toxicity, any potential therapeutic use is overshadowed by the risk of poisoning. The primary active compound, cerberin, affects the heart and nervous system, leading to symptoms such as arrhythmias, seizures, and potentially death. Historical accounts indicate that the seeds have been used in suicides and homicides, further emphasizing their danger. Modern research has focused on understanding the toxicological effects of cerberin, but no safe medicinal applications have been established.
