The Ghost Orchid is a rare epiphytic orchid that grows attached to tree trunks in humid swamp forests and tropical hardwood

hammocks. Unlike most plants, it produces no visible leaves; instead, flattened green roots cling directly to bark and

perform photosynthesis, allowing the plant to survive high above the forest floor.

When it blooms, the Ghost Orchid produces a luminous white flower that can appear to float in midair, seemingly detached from

the plant itself. Flowering is unpredictable and may not occur every year, which contributes to its mystique and rarity in the

wild.

Its pollination is often associated with large sphinx moths capable of reaching nectar deep within the flower’s long spur—a

specialized relationship that makes the species especially sensitive to habitat disruption and ecological change.
