i like to EAT, so a lot of my collection will be edible plants. figs are so frickin good.
also added a pic of profig's guide to rooting cuttings. it's awful when the cuttings fail, so hopefully that'll help someone. thanks profigs
fig is famously the "fruit without a flower" 无花果. the flowers are real, they just bloom hidden inside the fruit, so if you are surprised/disgusted when you see a male/capri fig, that's why.
fig leaf is the antidiabetic part.
taken as a leaf decoction it lowers blood glucose and has been reported to cut the insulin dose some diabetics need, and the fruit pulp separately improved cholesterol and triglyceride numbers in a study.
dried figs are very high in natural sugar, so the dried fruit will raise blood sugar and should be kept small.
if you are on diabetes medication and add fig leaf, monitor for low blood sugar.
fig latex (the white sap) contains sterol compounds (6-O-acyl-beta-D-glucosyl-beta-sitosterols) and the enzyme ficin, that kill cancer cells in the lab, and the fruit's anthocyanins add antioxidant anticancer support.
do not put raw fig latex on skin lesions and go in the sun.
fig latex is a traditional wart remedy that worked about as well as freezing (cryotherapy) in a trial, thanks to the enzyme ficin dissolving the wart tissue plus antiviral action. kinda crazy ngl. latex, dabbed on the wart only, kept out of sun.
and fig's psoralens are the natural version of the light-activated drugs used to re-pigment vitiligo patches.
this is the same chemistry that burns you tho: fig leaf or latex on skin followed by sun exposure causes blistering chemical burns.
fig leaf and fruit protect the liver from chemical and drug damage by lowering oxidative stress and shielding liver cells.
good for general liver support, drug-stressed liver, and as an adjunct in fatty liver, alongside real medical care.
fig supports the heart by improving cholesterol and triglyceride numbers and adding antioxidant protection to blood vessels, plus its potassium helps blood pressure. good for high cholesterol, cardiovascular support, and mild hypertension as part of a heart-healthy diet.
figs are a gentle laxative.
the fiber plus natural sugars pull water into the stool and makes you genuinely poop, and the fruit's enzymes aid protein digestion.
good for constipation, sluggish digestion, and hemorrhoid-related straining.
dried figs soaked overnight are the traditional constipation remedy.
easy on the dose though, bcuz too many dried figs at once is a fast track to the opposite problem iykyk.
ficin is a protease with some reported fibrin-degrading activity btw, so if you have blood clots... not coaxing you into getting figs, cuz it's an addiction lowkey.
fig leaf and latex have folk emmenagogue use, so large medicinal doses are traditionally avoided in pregnancy, but it is not a validated contraceptive.
Figs themselves, are incredible, dried or fresh, right off the tree. You can also use figs as fodder, especially if you have an excess amount. I will be updating this entry just to update the new varieties I get, and on that note; CAUTION!
when getting into buying figs if you haven't already:
Like all collections, this will turn into a crazy hobby. Just thinking you'll get one or two or three, will never be just that. There will be another variety you simply must have. Thinking "okay I'll look up the best and rarest variety and stick with that" is exactly how you'll end up in the pits of fig hell. I started out with a black madeira (incredibly slow grower), I-258, and that was supposed to be it. Then I saw a Red Sicilian for sale, and came home with that AND a huge Cdd Grise tree. Years later, I just spent $800 on a cutting!!!! 😭
fig varieties in my collection:
i-258, red sicilian, cdd grise, angelito, sacred origin's amelia's vanilla cream, kurume kuromitsu, kurume kuroama, kurume basaro, kurume honey drop, jin ao fen, raspberry latte.
to re-purchase/add to my collection:
black madeira, green michurinska, izbat an naj, sacred origin's banana dream, sacred origin's weeping apple pie, sacred origin's blackberry tart, sacred origin's praline cream, smith, Irene's Black Greek, kazery.
