What soil pH actually means for your plant
pH measures how acidic or alkaline your soil is on a scale from 0 to 14, with 7 being neutral. Most houseplants thrive between 6.0 and 7.0, the range where essential nutrients like nitrogen, phosphorus, and iron are most soluble. When pH drifts outside that window, nutrients become chemically locked in the soil and the plant shows deficiency symptoms even though the elements are technically present.
How to test your soil at home
Inexpensive probe meters give a quick reading but can drift over time. For more reliable results, pick up a soil pH test kit from a garden centre. Collect a tablespoon of soil from two inches below the surface, mix it with distilled water as directed, and compare the colour against the included chart. Testing every six months is enough for most indoor plants.
Common signs of pH problems
Iron chlorosis, where new leaves emerge pale yellow with dark green veins, is a classic sign of pH that is too high. On the other end, very acidic soil can cause brown, scorched leaf tips and stunted growth because toxic levels of aluminium and manganese become available. If your plant looks nutrient-starved despite regular feeding, pH is the first thing to investigate.
Lowering pH for acid-loving plants
Azaleas, gardenias, blueberries, and many ferns prefer pH in the 5.0 to 6.0 range. To bring alkaline soil down, mix in sphagnum peat moss or add a small amount of elemental sulphur to the potting mix. Watering with a dilute vinegar solution, roughly one tablespoon per gallon, offers a short-term fix but needs repeating and should be used cautiously to avoid root burn.
Raising pH when soil is too acidic
If your soil tests below 6.0 and your plant prefers neutral conditions, add a light dusting of horticultural lime or dolomitic limestone to the surface and water it in. Crushed eggshells mixed into the potting medium release calcium carbonate slowly and raise pH gently over weeks. Avoid overcorrecting; small adjustments over multiple waterings are safer than a single large dose.
How potting mix and water affect pH over time
Peat-based mixes start slightly acidic and tend to become more so as organic matter decomposes. Conversely, tap water in many regions is alkaline and gradually raises soil pH with every watering. Knowing your water's baseline pH, easily tested with the same kit, helps you predict which direction your soil will drift and whether you need to compensate proactively.
